It’s been two years since Kaylyn Elaine Warren of Middletown lost her battle to leukemia, but her family and friends plan to celebrate what would have been her 20th birthday the way she would have wanted – with music.
Before she passed away, Kay had the idea for “Kay’s Kamp,” the first oncology camp for children with cancer in Delaware. The Kaylyn Elaine Warren Foundation was born to support that idea.
“Kay’s Kamp” will open in August 2009 at St. Joseph’s at Providence Creek in Clayton, but funding is needed to make the camp a reality.
On June 8 – Kay’s birthday, KEWF will hold an Open Air Christian Concert benefit from 1 to 9 p.m. at Uncle Bob’s Music Park, located at 565 Kirk Road in Elkton, Md.
“It’s just going to be a fun day,” said Laurie Warren, Kay’s mother. “Kaylyn was all about music, so this is very fitting for her birthday. She would have had a ball there.”
The concert will feature Building 429, along with five other bands – the 3Sixteen Band, the Erich Daniel Band, Sum of One, Unsearchable Riches and Jenny & Tyler.
“Building 429 is just an incredible Christian band,” Laurie said. “I’ve always really liked them. We decided if we’re going to have one band, we might as well have a few.”
Building 429 has several hit songs and are winners of the Gospel Music Channel’s Dove Award.
Laurie said the concert will have youth talent performing during the set changes with Josiah Peirce, Aaron Rey Ebreo, Riley Austin, Alex, Jacob & Chad Austin and Sammy Jo Isom.
Angela Cacia, marketing director for KEWF, said the location is perfect for the event.
“It’s a little hidden treasure in the countryside,” she said. “Once you get out there, it’s just this big, big area of open space.”
The event will have all kinds of games and activities for the whole family, including a moon bounce, sand and spin art, jugglers, puppeteers and carnival clowns.
Food, treats and beverages will be available, too, but alcohol will not be served.
“It’s just good, wholesome fun,” Laurie said. “It’s a great day to spend with the family.”
She said there also will be a drawing for a 2008 Harley Davidson XL 883C Sportster 883 Custom, which retails for $8,500. Tickets are $20 each.
To go along with the bike, a new Harley Davidson riding jacket will be raffled off.
“It’s an old-fashioned, great, outdoor day,” Cacia said. “You can bond with your family and listen to good Christian music. It’s fun and fellowship.”
Tickets for the Open Air Christian Concert are $5 per person in advance and $8 at the event. Children 5 and younger are free. Parking passes can be purchased for $5.
To purchase tickets for the event or raffle, go to www.kewf.org or call KEWF at (888) 539-3413.
